A Whistlestop Visit to Clerkenwell and Faringdon
Last year, the fabulously stylish Suzanne Delahunty did a travel blog on Clerkenwell and Faringdon, it looked fascinating and I made a mental note to go and visit the places she recommended. Unbeknown to me, my daughter kept the article and booked the trip as my Christmas present!
We stayed at the The Zetter Hotel, Clerkenwell. It was surprisingly budget-friendly and so stylish and comfortable. We arrived late afternoon Friday so decided to eat in the hotel on our first night. I imagined usual hotel fare, but this was outstanding, the delicious complimentary appetisers was an indication of what was to come, great start to the trip.
The following day we set off to sightsee, but had to have a hearty breakfast to keep us going, right?
The Modern Pantry, opposite the hotel (another Suzanne recommendation) was quite simply one of the best breakfast/brunches I’ve eaten, we were lucky as we arrived early and hadn’t booked.
After breakfast, we set off on foot to explore. As neither of us had visited the area before, we were happy just mooching around admiring the architecture, the history and a few shopping stops, of course. After a few miles walking around the area, it was time for a quick pit stop for lunch. After food, we continued to follow our noses and ended up in The Museum of London – I didn’t even realise there was one! it was absolutely fascinating, the whole history of London is there as far back as you wish to go, really worth going back with my grandchildren.
A quick rest back at the hotel, we went to Luca (thanks Suzanne!!) for a great vodka martini and delicious supper, very buzzy and glad my daughter had booked. Luca have their own house olive oil which is worth heading back for alone!
Would we go back? Absolutely! It was such a treat to abandon the car, there was so much to see within walking distance of the hotel. Wear comfortable shoes!
