We’ve (selflessly) done the research so you don’t have to..

We run an Air BnB in our grounds and I’m often asked where to eat and shop in the local area so I thought I’d share my recommendations on here!

We have lived in Henley on Thames (3 miles outside actually) for about 15 years and I’m still discovering new places. I love to cook but we also eat out a lot and are spoilt for choice. In fact, Harrods are opening their first café outside Knightsbridge in Henley soon! Until that happens, here are our favourites..

Great spicy scrambled eggs, good coffee and cakes. They get very busy and are happy to let your dog join you.

The Farm Kitchen at Swiss Farm

Almost reluctant to talk about this one as I don’t want it to get too busy! Swiss Farm is a camping and touring spot and this is the lovely cafe on site. Great breakfasts (my favourite is the vegetarian) lovely service and dogs welcome in the conservatory. They also have their own car park – shhh!

Hart Street Tavern

We’re lucky to have David Holliday and Alex Sargent open a restaurant in the heart of Henley , they already had The Bottle and Glass, Binfield Heath, which is superb and now we have our own local one.
We have had dinner, breakfast (we’re big on breakfast) and cocktails (they mix a mean martini) and the service is as good as the food. You can dress up or down, the spots at the bar looked good the last time I was there – just go, sooo good.

Spice Merchant

This is pricy for an Indian Restaurant but it’s not your average curry, the food is beautiful prepared and presented with a light touch. Hussain and his team are warm and knowledgeable.

Sean Dickens at the Boat House

Further along the river is a great restaurant over-looking the river. Some of the best cuisine around. Breakfast is also served on the terrace and if it’s a bit cool, you can book the ‘igloo’ and enjoy the view without getting cold.

The Barn

Just outside Henley in Turville Heath is The Barn. If you have overseas visitors, take them here, it is a Barn but not the renovated type! It’s basic but the food is not, meat is sourced locally and the bacon and sausages in rolls are outstanding. It can’t be reached by car, only on bike or foot or horseback. Dogs welcome – there is even something on the menu for them – a doggy sausage!

The Frog at Skirmett

Above average pub food, it’s really good. Really nice ‘local’ feel about the place. They also do take away Fish and Chips, perfect when you don’t want to cook. They also have three rooms if you want to stay.

We are also a short drive from Marlow and there are some excellent places to eat there too!

Our favourite place to go for breakfast. It’s popular so to avoid the crowds, arrive before 10am.

The Ivy
Love the food and the decor here.

One of Tom Kerridge’s excellent venues. The Hand and Flowers and The Butchers Tap are his too, we are spoilt for choice.

So that’s it for this week’s foodie guide to Henley! Next week, I’ll let you know where to shop and what there is to do!
